Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum

MUSEUM CLOSED FOR MAJOR EXPANSION -  WILL REOPEN FALL 2019

The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum is closed for a major expansion until fall 2019. The major expansion is designed to increase exhibition programs and to showcase a larger portion of the museum's renowned permanent collection. For more details about the closure, access to the Museum Study Room, and the expansion project itself, click here.

The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, formerly known as the Washington University Gallery of Art, is located in the same building as the Department of Art History and Archaeology. It is a wonderful resource for the Department's faculty, staff, and students, along with the Washington University community. The Museum's collection contains strong holdings of 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century European and American paintings, sculptures, prints, and photographs. The collection also includes the Wulfing Collection of Ancient Coins, Egyptian and Greek antiquities, over one hundred Old Master prints, and Native American objects. Art History students can take advantage of the Museum's resources through participating in the Teaching Galleries (Student Docent) Program and researching works of art in the galleries or through Study Room visits.

Teaching Gallery
The Teaching Gallery at the Kemper Art Museum allows for Washington University faculty and graduate students to organize exhibitions integrating objects from the Museum's collection into the curricula of a specific course taught during the fall, spring, or summer semesters. The gallery is located within the Bernoudy Permanent Collection Gallery. All Teaching Gallery exhibitions that have been organized and curated by the faculty and/or graduate students of the Department of Art History and Archaeology are listed in the Museum's "Past Exhibitions" page.
