Rembrandt's Amsterdam

In the seventeenth century, Amsterdam was not just the wealthiest, most powerful city in the Dutch Republic; it was praised as the center of the western world. Dutch maritime prowess and trading ventures around the globe resulted in the exponential growth of the urban fabric of Dutch cities and their fame, and Amsterdam was first among equals. A hub of international commerce, it was home to a burgeoning print industry and to some of the most renowned artists of the time. Perhaps no seventeenth-century Dutch artist is as renowned as Rembrandt-for his paintings, his drawings, and his experimental prints. Rembrandt is celebrated as the inventor of the selfie; as a master of landscape, portraiture, and history (narrative) paintings; and as a collector who survived bankruptcy. This course surveys the history of Amsterdam in the seventeenth century through the lens of Rembrandt's works and life, as well as the those of Johannes Vermeer, Frans Hals, and other contemporaries.
