Hoyon’s paper, titled “Co-Conspirators: Impressionism, Tourism, and the Invention of Modern Thailand,” was accepted for “Impressionism and the Longue Durée of Empire,” a session at the 2024 CAA conference chaired by Simon Kelly and Alexis Clark. The paper was developed out of a seminar paper written for “The Impressionist Landscape: Style, Place and Global Legacies 1870-1920,” taught by Dr. Childs in the Fall 2022 semester. It considers impressionistic paintings in 1960s Thailand as both an “academic” art form taught at the Thai Fine Arts University and a set of touristic images sold to Western visitors via the Bangkok galleries in a broader context of Thai nationalist politics.
