Spatial Art History in Practice: Artists in the City: Mapping the Art Worlds of 18th Century Paris

Recommended by DAHL Graduate Fellow Elizabeth Mangone!

If you want to learn more about a research project that would not have been possible without the use of digital mapping technology, Artists in the City: Mapping the Art Worlds of 18th Century Paris is for you! In it, Dr. Hannah Williams discusses where Parisian artists lived in the 18th century using data displayed on an interactive map (available at www.artistsinparis.org). Her project revealed:

  • How artists began to group together in neighborhoods or on certain streets as the 18th century unfolded
  • That Academicians and Guild artists--once thought to exist in separate spheres--may have been more socially interconnected than once thought.
  • What role Parisian artists living abroad played in establishing Paris as an international artistic hub
